  1. We define a concrete type ConsoleLogger. No memory is allocated - this is just a type definition.

  1. This is where things get interesting:
  • cl := ConsoleLogger{} creates a value of type ConsoleLogger. This allocates memory for the struct (though it’s empty, so it’s minimal).

  • When you call doSomething(cl), Go sees that doSomething expects a parameter of type Logger (an interface).

  • The compiler checks if ConsoleLogger has all the methods required by Logger. It does, so the call is allowed - this is implicit interface satisfaction.

  • At runtime, Go creates an internal interface value (iface):

  • The tab pointer points to a special runtime structure called an itab (interface table). The itab contains

    • The type info for the concrete type (ConsoleLogger).
    • The method table mapping the interface’s methods (e.g., Log) to the concrete type's implementations.
  • The data pointer points to the actual value of cl (the actual ConsoleLogger instance).

  • When you call a method on an interface variable (like l.Log("Hello") inside doSomething), Go doesn’t know at compile time which concrete type is stored in l. Instead, it uses the method table stored in the itab to look up the correct function to call for the actual type. This process is called dynamic dispatch:

    • The interface value (l) contains a pointer to the method table for the concrete type (ConsoleLogger).
    • When you call l.Log(), Go looks up the Log method in the method table and calls the implementation for ConsoleLogger.
    • This allows you to use different types that satisfy the interface, and Go will always call the correct method for the actual value stored in the interface.

However, if the interface is empty (i.e., interface{}), it has a different internal representation (it's called eface):

I.e. use a type assertion: v, ok := l2.(*ConsoleLogger); ok && v == nil tries to extract the underlying value from the interface l2 as a *ConsoleLogger. If l2 actually holds a value of type *ConsoleLogger (even if it's nil), ok will be true and v will be the value (which could be nil). This lets you distinguish between an interface that is nil and one that holds a nil pointer of a concrete type.

The nil interface pitfall is the most famous, but similar issues arise wherever Go uses type/value pairs, especially with pointers, interfaces, and custom types:

1. Nil Slices, Maps, Channels, Functions\

  • A nil slice (var s []int = nil) is not the same as an empty slice (s := []int{}).
  • Nil maps, channels, and functions behave differently from non-nil, but empty, values.
